Dear Smarties:

No doubt all of  you are aware of the devastation caused by the hurricane that hit the eastern seaboard last night. The news is not good:  millions without power, 16 confirmed dead, neighborhoods on fire, most of the the Jersey Shore under water, NYC subway system flooded, and the southern tip of Manhattan cut off to first-responders.

As your VP of Services, I'd like to encourage all of you to help. Food, clothing, and medicine are what's needed. The Red Cross is suggesting a donation of $10 to facilitate their efforts to direct these resources where they are needed most. Let's keep it simple. If you've GOT it, please GIVE it.

To help those affected by Hurricane Sandy donate through the Red Cross website or call (800) 733-2767. You can also text the word ‘REDCROSS’ to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions may also be sent to your local Red Cross chapter or the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.

Update: We raised $41 at our meeting yesterday for the Sandy Relief !  Way to go Smarties.  I will be collecting donations through the end of the month before we send a check to the RED CROSS.  Gilbert says our club goal is $100.

Thank you.

Best,

Marvin Morris
Vice President of Services, PTK

Zombie Walk for Prop 30

Get involved!!!!

Proposition 30 is the only measure on the November 6 ballot that will prevent further cuts to education, prevent steep tuition hikes for students and their families and enable the state to invest more this year in preparing students for jobs and the future.  90% of the revenues will come from a modest tax increase on the wealthy, and 10% will come from a ¼% sales tax increase.

Hundreds of Los Angeles Community College District students from all nine campuses will participate in a “Zombie Walk for Education” in support of Prop. 30 on Friday, October 26th.  Many participants will be dressed like zombies to represent the forces preventing students from reaching their goal: graduation. The students will march from L.A. City Hall to Governor Brown’s office beginning at 1:00pm.

Zombies will appear during the last 100 yards of the march, slowing down some students with things like “no classes” or “can't afford fees” signs, while only a small percentage of students will make it to the safe zone at the finish line.

WHAT:              Zombie Walk for Education
WHEN:              1:00-3:00 pm, Friday, October 26, 2012
WHERE:           Los Angeles City Hall, 200 North Spring St. to Ronald Reagan Building at 300 S. Spring St.
WHO:                 Hundreds of LACCD students, educators and community members

Ralph Bunche Meetup

Thursday, October 4th, was the biannual Ralph Bunche Scholars meetup at the Faculty and Staff Center. There were about 40 people in attendance. It was great to meet new RBS members and re-connect with old ones. It's often difficult to get to know other RBS students when we're all so busy during the semester and these events allow for us to connect names to faces.

An Honors Club meeting was held after the RBS meetup, at which the new positions were filled.
